Arma Reforger is a tactical military sandbox that brings realistic combat, deep modding support, and next-gen graphics to the table. Unlike the frustrating mess that is setting up a DayZ console server, hosting an Arma Reforger server is a much more rewarding experience—offering flexibility, customization, and a taste of what’s to come in Arma 4.

Welcome to the battlefield! Alpha-Unit’s Arma Reforger server is officially live, and we’re excited to share the tools, possibilities, and everything we’ve learned along the way. Whether you’re a techie wanting to dive into server management or a casual player looking to join the fun, this blog covers everything: from server tools and modding potential to crossplay issues, backups, and bandwidth requirements.

  • No password (yet): We’re keeping it open during the testing phase, but passwords will be implemented for enhanced security once testing is done.
  • Reach out on Discord for access or questions. If you need more power just ask nicely.

Arma Reforger Server Tools: What Makes It Tick?

Running an Arma Reforger server is surprisingly flexible compared to some other games (looking at you, DayZ!). Here are the tools that make it possible for us at the moment just incase you want to give it a go yourself reach out to me [email protected] if you need help. I will help as much as I can even if it is the blind leading the blind.

1. The Server Manager

  • The Arma Reforger Server Manager is straightforward and easy to use even if it seems convoluted.
  • You can configure game modes, tweak settings, and even manage server logs without needing third-party tools which is nice unfortunately the main website to get the list of commands seems to be down.

2. Modding Integration

Reforger fully supports mods through its Workshop system. Mods can be added directly to the server, enabling you to:

  • Create custom scenarios for players.
  • Add new weapons, vehicles, or factions.
  • Enable quality-of-life mods that enhance UI or gameplay.
🎮 Example Mods: Want to run a WW2 campaign? Easy. Prefer a zombie apocalypse scenario? Done. The possibilities are endless.

3. Real-Time Mission Crafting with Game Master Mode

One standout tool is the Game Master Mode, which allows admins to:

  • Build or adjust missions on the fly.
  • Spawn units, vehicles, or objectives in real time to keep gameplay dynamic.

    • Want to run a civilian resistance mission? Or a spy-themed infiltration op? Modding makes it possible.
  3. Expanding the Arsenal
    • Mods can add weapons, vehicles, and even entire factions not present in the base game.
  4. Visual Enhancements
    • UI mods and shader tweaks can make gameplay smoother and more immersive.
  5. So far we settled on one server mode, where the admin has full control over all spawn points and entities.

Crossplay Issues and Solutions

While Arma Reforger supports crossplay between PC and Xbox, there are a few quirks to keep in mind, and lets face it there always will be something:

1. PC Players Joining Modded Servers

Mods are supported on PC but require manual downloads on Xbox.

  • Solution: Always keep a list of required mods available for players in your server description or Discord. There maybe issues with Playstation and modding in fact I dont think they can join a modded map as of yet (Feb 2025)

2. Desync Issues

Occasionally, crossplay servers may experience desynchronization, especially with large-scale battles hopefully the bandwidth keeps up and we all have a good experience of game play.

  • Solution: Keep an eye on server load, and consider capping player counts during heavy engagements well I will be looking at the pings.

3. Communication Across Platforms

PC players often use Discord or other voice tools, but Xbox players may rely on in-game comms.

  • Solution: We always encourage all players to join the Alpha-Unit Discord for a unified communication platform.

Backups: Protect Your Progress

Backing up your server files is crucial, especially when dealing with mods and configuration changes.

Why Backups Matter:

  • Mods or updates can occasionally break server stability.
  • Player progress in long campaigns needs to be preserved.

How to Back Up:

  1. Automate Backups: Use a script or third-party tool to back up files daily.
  2. Cloud Storage: Save backups to the cloud for easy restoration.
  3. Version Control: Keep multiple backups in case an update corrupts the latest save.

Bandwidth Requirements: What You Need to Host

Hosting Arma Reforger requires decent bandwidth, especially for larger player counts. Here’s what to expect:

  • Per Player: ~150-450 KB/s upload per active player.
  • Recommended Bandwidth: At least 15 Mbps upload for 20 players.
  • Stability Matters: A stable connection is more important than raw speed.

Tips for Optimising Bandwidth:

  • Limit the maximum player count based on your connection speed.
  • Disable unnecessary background apps on the hosting machine.
  • Regularly monitor server load using Reforger’s tools.
